Join the American Ladino League for an in-depth conversation about Sephardic storytelling, searching for the past, and taking inspiration from the Ladino language. Ruth Behar is the James W. Fernandez Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her newest book is Across So Many Seas (Penguin Random House, 2024), which received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and School Library Journal Review.
Dr. Behar will be interviewed by Hannah Pressman, ALL co-founder and Education Director at the HUC-JIR Jewish Language Project. Dr. Pressman created the Educators Guide for Across So Many Seas with a special focus on the novel’s rich dialogue with Ladino and Sephardic history.
ALL Authors is a public program that engages with authors and creators who work with Ladino in the American cultural sphere. The conversations are held in English with Ladino references throughout. This free Zoom event will last 75 minutes and will include time for Q&A with the author as well as on-air book giveaways and prizes.

ALL Authors: Kickoff Event
The American Ladino League presents Dr. Gloria Ascher (Professor Emerita, Tufts University) in conversation with Dr. Bryan Kirschen (Associate Professor and Chair of Romance Languages, Binghamton University).
Join the newly launched American Ladino League (ALL) on Monday, April 8 for its first public program. We have planned a wonderful series that will engage with authors and creators who are choosing to work with Ladino in the American cultural sphere. Gloria Ascher recently published The Diario (Albion Andalus, 2023), a bilingual Ladino-English version of her uncle’s journal.
The conversation will be held in English and will touch on topics such as the choice to translate this text, Dr. Ascher’s approach to bilingual editions, and the challenges/rewards of creating literature in — or in dialogue with — Ladino in 21st century America. This Zoom webinar will last one hour and will include time for Q&A with the author.
