In 2025 the ALL launched Paramista, a pilot program to pair experienced Ladino speakers with learners for regular conversation. With contacts around the world, ALL has an extensive network of native speakers who are eager to share their knowledge with students. Pairs are expected to meet at least monthly for in-depth chats, and they work together to complete a project by the end of the year. Year-end projects in 2026 included joint translations of Aesop’s fables, a program for the Enkontros de Alhad YouTube series, and more.
If you haven’t ever heard the Ladino word paramista, that’s because we made it up! Paramista is a play on the Ladino words par (pair) and para (for), combined with amista[d] (friendship, affection). This neologism reflects how friendship ties and socializing can be for transmitting language. We saw great results from the Paramista pilot, and we expect this program to go from strength to strength!
Applications for the 2026-2027 Paramista cohort will be available in Summer 2026. Please check back here or subscribe to the ALL newsletter for updates about applying for this and other opportunities at the ALL.
