La Varika

Coming in June 2026!

Hannah Pressman’s new blog series, “La Varika,” will post monthly dispatches from the world of Ladino revitalization in the 21st century. The title of the series is a play on “La Vara” (The Stick), which was the name of two historic Ladino publications. First there was a “La Vara” newspaper published in Cairo, Egypt, from 1905-1908. A second “La Vara” was published on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York, from 1922-1948. Taking for herself the name “La Varika” (The Little Stick), Hannah is intentionally referencing her predecessors both in the Middle East and in America. Stay tuned for wry observations, poignant reflections, and occasional forays into grammatical territory. “La Varika” will begin monthly publication in June 2026.

  • The Ladino Lounge, with the American Ladino League, hosts a weekly virtual meetup for learners as well as speakers of Ladino. Please join us on Wednesdays at 1:00pm ET/10:00am PT.     • Note (1): Information appearing in the headings or subheadings is often printed in Meruba instead of Rashi characters.

Newspaper (Contemporary)

    • This is the only remaining newspaper printed entirely in Ladino. It is published once a month and serves as a supplement to the Shalom (Şalom) newspaper of the Turkish-Jewish community, which prints articles in Turkish, English, as well as Ladino.

  • Aki Yerushalayim, published digitally since 2019 and appearing two-three times per year.
