This month we are featuring Aki Yerushalayim, a journal published in Jerusalem since 1979 and still in circulation today. What began as “una revista trimestrial fundada por el ekipo de la Emision en Djudeo-Espanyol de Kol Israel (La Radyo de Israel)” under the leadership of its editor-in-chief, Moshe Shaul (de bendicha memoria), continues today in digital format under the direction of Aldo Sevi.
From its very first issue, Aki Yerushalayim set forth two principal goals:
- Azer mijor konoser la kultura i el folklor de los djudios sefaradis (de orijen espanyola) ansi ke sus istoria i sus estado aktual.
To foster a better understanding of the culture, folklore, history, and contemporary state of Sephardic Jews (of Spanish origin). - Estimular i ayudar a renovar, en la mizura del posible, la aktividad literaria i folklorika en Djudeo-Espanyola.
To encourage and help renew, insofar as possible, literary and folkloric activity in Judeo-Spanish.
For decades, Aki Yerushalayim has provided readers with articles on Sephardic history and culture, as well as the rich diversity of Judeo-Spanish language, song, and cuisine.
