One way the ALL is bolstering Ladino community around the country is by supporting local celebrations of Ladino Day. We’re proud to announce that we are an official cosponsor of Seattle’s 12th annual Ladino Day celebration, featuring Leigh Bardugo, #1 New York Times bestselling author! Hosted by Sephardic Studies at the University of Washington, the program will take place in person and via livestream on Sunday, December 8, at 10:00am PST.
Leigh Bardugo’s new novel, “The Familiar,” features a Sephardic Jewish heroine in 16th-century Spain who draws magical powers from her family’s secret language, Ladino. Bardugo will be in conversation with UW Assistant Professor Canan Bolel, who was a consultant on the book. Together they will discuss what drew Bardugo to this story and setting, how she wove Ladino into her narrative, the family history that inspired her, and the collaboration with Bolel that led to the selection of Ladino refranes (expressions) included in “The Familiar.”
