Tokar Manos: A Conversation with Dr. Joe Halio
Join the American Ladino League for a conversation with Joe Halio, author of The Sephardic Logo: Symbol of Unity and Cooperation.
Joe Halio, M.D., was raised in a Sephardic family from Salonica and Turkey, immersed in Ladino language and culture. He is the grandson of Albert J. Torres, publisher of La Vara, and the son of Hank Halio, author of Ladino Reveries. He has always been active in the Sephardic community of New York, and has been a member of almost every current Sephardic organization. Currently, he is President of the Sephardic Foundation on Aging, the successor to the Sephardic Home, the only Sephardic institution to garner the cooperation of all the other Balkan Sephardic groups. Through his efforts, lost voices and forgotten stories of Sephardic Jews, especially from Greece, have been honored and revived.
Bryan Kirschen, co-director of the American Ladino League and Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics at Binghamton University, will discuss Joe’s latest book, as well as the Ladino legacy of his family.
